Holiday Weekend

We’ve had such a relaxing holiday weekend… shopping in the city with our wonderful mom, cooking for friends (including Katie Kime, who made a surprise visit from Austin!), and getting ready to eat Peter’s famous Easter lamb.

Lone Star Love

Just a few days post-Paris we headed to the Lone Star state with Claire and Erica, the gals behind one of our favorite e-tailers, Of A Kind. It was my inaugural visit to Dallas, where we discovered the adorable Belmont hotel (and Smoke, the delicious accompanying restaurant), incredible farm-to-table fare at Bolsa, and unparalleled huevos rancheros and “hand-crafted caffeine” at breakfast favorite, Oddfellows, in the trendy Oak Cliff neighborhood:

Believe it or not, our 24 hours in Dallas were not all about cocktails and pulled pork. We got a chance to visit the Nasher Museum (the sculpture garden is beyond!) and some great stores, including VOD – a longtime favorite that stocks Vanessa Bruno, SUNO, Ohne Titel, and the like, and Five and Ten – the smaller sister to Dallas Empire, Forty Five Ten (home to killer pieces from major labels like Balenciaga, Dries Van Noten, Proenza Schouler, and The Row):

We also popped by the Ten Over Six pop-up at the Joule Hotel. We were so excited to see a preview of the products (including amazing Jasmine Shokrian dresses, Jenni Kayne flats, Pamela Love jewels, bags by yours truly, and a stack of Tank Mags) that will soon be available at the Dallas outpost of our favorite LA boutique. The Ten Over Six shop will be accompanied by a coffee bar and housewares and gift store. We can’t wait to come back and see it!

After Dallas we hopped on I-35 and headed to Austin, with a brief stop at Bon Ton, a side-of-the-road vintage shop piled high with some incredible finds. I scored a long camel coat and check out Kathryn’s two-piece lace get-up below. We could have spent hours here but Austin was calling!

Austin is among my absolute favorite cities. For me, it means top-notch sangria outside at Hotel San Jose, two-stepping at The Broken Spoke, and long walks around Town Lake with our great friend, Katie, of Katie Kime (the go to for the best furniture in modern silhouettes and bright-colored and printed upholstery, lucite trays, paper products, and more):

This trip also included an all day shopping event at Kick Pleat (hosted by the gals from Of A Kind and featuring lots of new jewels from yours truly), and some great hangout time with our brother and best friend Laird (creators of the app CrowdSync) who were in town to showcase their app at South by Southwest:

We loved getting to visit with shoppers at Kick Pleat and also do some shopping of our own (I haven’t stopped wearing the knit Demylee sweater I picked up). Owner and buyer, Wendi, has the most immaculate laid back meets fashion forward style and a visit to her home proved that she’s equally talented with interiors:

Visiting our good friends in Austin and enjoying the city’s ridiculously good food, music, and weather is always a treat. Can’t wait to return soon and will be shopping online at Of A KindKick Pleat and Katie Kime (look out for her e-commerce launching any day now) in the mean time!

Vote for Momma

My mom has come up in quite a few posts and anyone who knows her knows she’s the coolest. She’s started businesses, run marathons, is a cowgirl, an awesome cook, and just the best mom around.

She’s also been nominated by Philadelphia Magazine for their first “Health Hero” award, which honors locals making a difference in the health & wellness community. SO, VOTE for her on the Health Hero Challenge page

As the director of Childhood Obesity & Hunger for Campbell Soup Company, my mom is spearheading a 10-year mission to reduce hunger and obesity in Camden, NJ, one of the nation’s poorest cities. The plan involves increased access to affordable, healthy food, and the expansion of physical activity and nutrition education resources.

delicious food & beautiful photographs at http://mimithorisson.com/

You can vote once a day every day from September 11th (TODAY!) through the 17th. So spread the word & vote often!

Love you mom!

Colorado, Colorado

Last week my mom, brother, Peter & I jetted off to our favorite state for a little rest, relaxation, and inspiration.

We adventured to the Northwest corner of the state ( just miles from Wyoming), then down through Rocky Mountain National Park, to Red Rocks Amphitheater  for a night of Neil Young & Crazy Horse, and ended up in Denver, where I visited with the girls at Goldyn boutique.

We’re so lucky to have discovered Midnight Ranch; 3 perfectly rambling log homes at the end of 4 miles of gravel. We stayed in the Lodge Pine House, canoed in the trout lake and spent many hours sitting outside watching the hummingbirds.

The interiors of Midnight Ranch were equally enchanting. Cathedral ceilings and eclectic antiques gave this place so much personality. I fell in love!

Over an hour North of Steamboat Springs and 17 miles from the nearest ‘General Store’, we were literally at the end of the road… Which meant great riding, hiking, and exploring:

Above: mom is a cowgirl, peter's made for hiking, and the Columbine general store is the only place around for miles. And Below: some rest stops along the hike to gilpin lake.

After reluctantly leaving Midnight Ranch, we drove through the breathtaking Rocky Mountain National Park. With hairpin turns and precipitous narrow roads (sans guard rails), we took in insane views and ended up at the old Hotel Stanley (where Stephen King famously wrote The Shining), in Estes Park.

A day of hiking in Estes & then it was off to Boulder, where we had an awesome lunch at The Kitchen Next Door, and visited with Caroline, who bakes the most insane creations for Kim & Jake’s Cakes. Our Colorado getaway ended perfectly: Neil Young & Crazy Horse at The Red Rocks Ampitheatre and a visit to Goldyn in Denver. We shopped for Kathryn (in NYC manning the office), at the awesome Highlands Boutique, which just started carrying LFJ:
